When I was a kid, on New Years Eve, I remember my parents used to throw coins up in the air and it would look like a shower of coins on us, then we would collect them and keep the coins for good luck. Filipino culture has a lot of influence from the Chinese traditions, sadly some them of them are associated to pagan worship. It was fun at that time, as a kid I thought it was all fun and games. But then when I grew up, I started to rely on it for fortune and that is when I ventured into the wrong path. For most of us during New Years we wish ourselves and each other prosperity and more money, and sometimes we associate blessings to just money and material things alone. There is nothing wrong with asking for more blessings, but if that is what is consuming us, and that becomes our main goal, then that is where we put money into the pedestal and eventually becoming our idol.
* He said in reply, “It is written:c
‘One does not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4)
I found this link and talks about material possession and praying for your mission in life. I pray that this year is not just all about getting more money and material possessions. May we be blessed with more faith, a faith that moves mountain and a total reliance on God for everything.
